Compare-a-Terra
water filter system comparison chart

IMPORTANT  NOTE:

US EPA (the federal organization responsible for our nation’s drinking water standards) DOES NOT test, approve, or endorse any method of water treatment system evaluation. Since there are no federal standards for drinking water treatment systems, EPA will refer consumers to NSF International to receive a listing of NSF certified drinking water treatment systems.

NSF, an independent not-for-profit organization devoted to developing testing protocols and administering programs addressing products and services that affect public health, has developed a drinking water treatment unit program and protocols for testing and certifying water treatment systems which states and industry have adopted.

Scientifically accurate testing of water filter systems is costly and essential for verifying any system’s performance. Many manufacturers and sellers of water filter systems choose not to pay for NSF certification. Claims about their product's performance are at best inaccurate and misleading. Without NSF certification, you have no assurance that the claims being made are based in fact.

Be sure to keep this in mind when you evaluate any water filtration system to be used to remove contaminants from the municipal tap water you and your family will drink.

When shopping for a water filter system, remember the following points:

  • Low cost per gallon of filtered water is important.
  • High percentages of contaminant reduction are important.
  • Low cost without verification of contaminant reduction claims is unlikely to represent a "good buy"!
  • A good buy will be a water filtration unit that offers:
    • A no-cost environmentally responsible filter recycling program.
    • Low cost performance, with performance legitimately certified by NSF.
